At the time, we had made hundreds of picnic and patio tables but only with backless picnic table benches. Our good friend, Tim M., from Santa Rosa, California, wanted armchairs for his table. Tim is 6'4" and 340 pounds. We built an armchair with straight lines to match the patio table’s simple elegant lines. Tim sat in 3 versions until he had an armchair with just the right amount of wiggle room for his size. The Massive armchair was born.

The Luna bench (soon to be an armchair too) was inspired by a full moon rising. Our founder, Raul Hernandez, asked for a bench to remind him of the magnificent moonrises over the Old-Growth Again forestlands in Annapolis. The Luna combines glowing Redwood tones with an arched backrest perimeter… yes, kind of like the moon peeking over the trees… We liked the arch motif and the fourth and final Luna design wound up with arched armrests and an inverted arch seat. After a couple tries, the inverted arch seat turned out to be very comfortable.
The Luna bench grew from the original 4-foot version to a 5-, 6- and 8-foot version because our thoughtful customers gently persuaded us to build the sizes they wanted. It wasn’t long before the Luna dining chair and armchair versions came along in 2005. |

Her beau wanted a rocking chair as a special gift to her. “Design elements?” said the beau, “I don’t know. I just want it to remind me of her” he told Master Carpenter Tony Toledo. Tony asked a few discreet questions and then pulled out the Massive Chair. He reduced the width and depth of the manly Massive chair and added the rocking assembly. Then the curves started… First, her back arched discreetly and almost inperceptibly backwards. Then her arms began a curious dip and roll while the seat suddenly had an agreeable gentle wave. The straight frame members were replaced by soft, playful motion-filled curves. After Tony’s third rocker, the guys in the shop preferred to stare at the rocker more than sit in it.
After several custom orders (yes, our customers literally had to say “I like the Ruth Rocker, can you make a bench 4 feet long with the same design for me?“), it occurred to us to make the Ruth design in bench sizes and as a dining and armchair in 2006. |

If you need a space-saving and portable chair, but also want the beauty and durability of fine redwood, we offer you the Redwood Folding Chair. Our Folding Chair is 32" tall, and the seat is 16" high, 23" wide, and 18" deep. Boards are fully 2" thick. Fold it up and put it away when not in use, then easily take it out for your next get together or trip!

Accessorize Your Chairs and Armchairs with Custom Cushions:
Handmade Custom Cushions: First visit Sunbrella Central to choose the outdoor fabric for your cushion. At checkout, the shopping cart will ask if you'd like a cushion. If you choose the cushion, there will be a box where you can type the fabric name and number. Most Sunbrella fabrics are under $20/yard and are included in the cushion price. If you prefer a premium fabric over $20/yard, just write it in the box at checkout. The cost over $20/yard will be manually added to your order total. Sunbrella fabric is made to sit out in the sun and not fade. It's machine washable. Each cushion has a zipper so you can remove the foam and wash the fabric. We will create and ship your custom cushion with your order. Choose whatever beautiful fabric you like— just let us know the name/number of the fabric you'd like us to order to make your cushion. Outdoor Furniture Covers: We can make custom covers for any of our furniture using Sunbrella fabric. Browse through the swatches at www.sunbrellacentral.com and then let us know which fabric you'd like us to use for which piece of furniture. We will send an estimate for your custom furniture cover within two business days. |
